Joyce disappointed with Marine Atlantic
fare increases
Liberal
Opposition Transportation and Works Critic Eddie Joyce stated today that the
announced increase in Marine Atlantic fares will raise the cost of goods
entering the province.
“These
fare increases will no doubt raise the cost of goods coming to the province
while also making it more expensive for people to travel to and from the
Island,” said Joyce. “Given the importance of Marine Atlantic to
Newfoundland and Labrador families and businesses, I’m disappointed with
these increases.”
Joyce
stated that this is another blow to Newfoundland and Labrador tourism and
would like to know what exactly the Dunderdale Government is doing to lobby
the Federal Government on this issue.
“The
province continually promotes our tourism industry yet it is becoming more
expensive for tourists to get here,” said Joyce. “I urge the premier to make
strong representation to the Federal Government to recognize the direct
economic impact this has on the province.”
Joyce
noted that he was surprised to hear that our federal minister, Peter
Penashue, stated yesterday that he was unaware that these increases were
happening.
“It is time for Minister
Penashue to get better informed on the issues facing our province and
provide the representation we need and expect,” said Joyce. “The onus is on
the Dunderdale Government to ensure that their federal cousins are informed
and acting in the best interest of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.”
