Analysis of Muskrat Falls by Dr. Wade Locke was flawed: Jones

Liberal Energy Critic Yvonne Jones stated today that it’s disturbing that Dr. Locke’s analysis of Muskrat Falls did not include the cost of transmission.

“To leave out the cost of transmission is a $2.1 billion oversight,” said Jones. “Dr. Locke has admitted that his analysis was ‘probably not’ a fair comparison, completely discrediting his conclusion that Muskrat Falls is a good project.”

Jones noted that Locke used an inaccurate figure of 7.5 cents per Kilowatt hour for Muskrat Falls power in his analysis instead of the minimum estimated cost of 16.4 cents.

“Dr. Locke’s analysis is clearly flawed and by not including the cost of transmission he has added more confusion to the public debate instead of clarity,” said Jones.

Jones noted that government is now trying to sell the Muskrat Falls deal as a solution to the power needs of the mining industry in Labrador but they have not included any Labrador transmission of this power in their project description.

“The Muskrat Falls project description includes nothing about Labrador being able to access any power from Muskrat Falls,” said Jones. “This is another disturbing oversight by the government and no doubt skews the economics of this deal.”
