Double
Standard on Muskrat Falls troubling: Jones
Liberal Opposition Energy Critic
Yvonne Jones says that it’s hypocritical of the Dunderdale Government to
not allow the Public Utilities Board (PUB) the time it needs to finish
their report, while at the same time indefinitely extending the deadline
for Nalcor and Emera to finalize their term sheet.
“Why is it okay for Nalcor and Emera
to have an indefinite deadline while the PUB is forced to produce an
inadequate report?” asked Jones. “The idea of taking the time necessary
to get it right should also apply to the PUB.”
Jones stated that she hopes this
missed deadline by Nalcor is a sign that government is reconsidering
their commitments to Emera and the sweet deal offered to Nova Scotia
ratepayers.
“I’ve always said that the deal with
Emera is a bad one, selling discounted power to residents of Nova Scotia
while providing nothing for the residents of Labrador,” said Jones. “I
certainly hope this is a sign that Nalcor and government are rethinking
their direction on Muskrat Falls.”
Jones noted that future plans on the
Lower Churchill should first and foremost benefit the people of Labrador
and provide energy for the booming mining industry.
“The Dunderdale Government likes to talk about using
Muskrat Falls power in Labrador, but in fact there is nothing in their
plan for using or transmitting this power in Labrador,” said Jones. “I
encourage the government to scrap their ill-fated deal with Emera and
begin the process of negotiating power purchase agreements with mining
companies in Labrador. That would satisfy power needs in Labrador and
reduce the significant financial risks that the Dunderdale Government is
heaping on all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.”
